His experience at the coalface of writing, marketing and business management is your secret weapon.
“I began my working life as a newspaper reporter for the Wellington Evening Post. After covering the murky world of court proceedings, I soon landed a promotion as a feature writer for the Post’s weekend tabloid. My love of popular music gave me the opportunity to interview the Rolling Stones and other 70s musicians, both local and international. A highlight of my journalism career was having my own weekly double-page spread devoted to music and musicians.
Commentating on other people’s achievements led to a desire to become an achiever, and so began a business career spanning three decades.
As managing director of Schwarzkopf NZ I gained an appreciation of the fashion industry and the importance of appealing communications. In addition to steering the company, I was involved with writing business, marketing and strategy documents.
When franchising arrived in New Zealand in the 1990s, I left the corporate world to become a partner in Franchise Sales NZ Ltd, where my role included supporting franchisers to write operation manuals and recruit franchisees.
The next step on my career path was becoming managing director for Stihl NZ Ltd, importers, distributors and marketers of German-made Stihl products. I spent six years keeping the Stihl brand number one in the New Zealand outdoor power equipment market. This role was followed by five years as group CEO for the Realcold Group of Companies, who supply processing and refrigeration equipment to food-related companies in Australasia.
As my appetite for the cut and thrust of front-line of business eased, I took a sideways step to create more time for boating, fishing and the other important things in life. This led to working for leading NZ marine supply company Burnsco, first as a retail sales person and eventually as store manager.
Today I’m semi-retired and living on the east coast of the Coromandel Peninsula. My new gig is working for myself in a job that draws on all the knowledge I’ve acquired over my working life. I’m a copywriter, business writer and general crafter of words that help businesses of all shapes and sizes to thrive and grow.”
